How to Choose the Perfect Cop Costume
Whether you are looking for a great Halloween costume idea or need the perfect thing to wear to your upcoming cops and robbers party, police and cop costumes are a fun choice. There are several different styles available for adults and kids, so getting a look that’s all your own isn’t hard if you know where to look and what to buy.
Good Cop vs Bad Cop
Choosing the right cop costume for you can be as easy as deciding what kind of officer you’d like to be. If you are feeling a little dangerous or naughty, a sexy cop costume for women will be a great choice. Maybe you’d like to bring a little humor to your interrogations. Then getting a funny doughnut cop costume or a Reno 911 Officer Dangle costume might suit you better. If you’d like to take a more serious approach, find a costume that is a more accurate replica of the actual police uniforms real officers wear.
Be the Only Sheriff in Town
Now that you’ve selected your costume, you’ll want to make sure that your costume is the most unique one around. One of the easiest ways to guard against copy cats is to add accessories. Add a pair of aviator shades, a badge, a police officer hat and other extras to set your cop costume apart from the rest. Remember, this is a chance to put your own signature on your costume so have fun and be creative!
For Extra Credit, Learn a Little Lingo
If you want to have the most authentic police costume then learning a little police speak is a must. This is not to be confused with speaking in police code all night long so that no one can understand you; that would be annoying. But having a few key phrases memorized for your party can be a great way to add realism to your costume. Here are a few to get your started:
10-4: a numeric code used over the radio that means “acknowledged” and is actually pretty well recognized by most people. So when your friend points out, “Wow, that guy looks pretty sleazy,” you can affirm her observation with a discreet “10-4.”
Bracelets: a slang term for handcuffs. Have fun telling guests to obey the rules or you’ll slap a pair of bracelets on them. Here you may need to dangle an actual pair of handcuffs in their face for them to catch your full meaning.
Detail: refers to a special assignment and can be for a specific event or a special unit. So you can let everyone know you are on “spilled drink” detail, or “watching for the real cops to show up” detail when they ask what you’ve been assigned to do as an officer of the law
